In 2011, the American Daffodil Society (ADS) designated a new exhibition section for any daffodil registered between 1940 and 1969, inclusive named "Classics".

The ADS believed that such a section would interest a different segment of exhibitors and might encourage bulb growers to keep these post-war era cultivars available.

The ADS Historic daffodil period ended shortly after World War II started, when marketing and exporting of daffodils temporarily ceased.

When trade resumed, daffodils were different, improvements in form were most noticeable.

Corona neatly ribbed.

A description according to Michael Jefferson-Brown’s 1962 Catalog: “A brillliant example of the new race of giant 3Bs. Blooms measured 4 3/4 in. across last year with shining white petals 2 in. long and 1 3/4 in. wide. The red cup contrasts vividly with the polished perianth, a few paler flecks somtimes touch the edge of the cup. Artillery is a tall vigorous plant, the forerunner of many more good 3Bs we hope.”
