ADS Classics

In 2011, the American Daffodil Society (ADS) designated a new exhibition section for any daffodil registered between 1940 and 1969, inclusive named "Classics".

The ADS believed that such a section would interest a different segment of exhibitors and might encourage bulb growers to keep these post-war era cultivars available.

The ADS Historic daffodil period ended shortly after World War II started, when marketing and exporting of daffodils temporarily ceased.

When trade resumed, daffodils were different, improvements in form were most noticeable.

The American Daffodil Society maintains a "Suggested List of Intermediate-Sized Daffodils".

The ADS defines an intermediate daffodil as a standard daffodil in Divisions 1, 2, 3, 4, or 11 having a single floret whose diameter is typically greater than 50mm and through 80mm.

Intermediate daffodils may be entered in ADS show exibition classes for standard daffodils as well as classes reserved for intermediate daffodils.

Commentaires

Fl. 55 mm wide; perianth segments roundish, blunt, slightly mucronate, brilliant greenish yellow, reflexed, with margins incurling, overlapping half; corona bowl-shaped, smooth or lightly ribbed, orange, with a broad yellow zone at base and sometimes with a darker orange at rim, mouth expanded and 6-lobed, with rim entire or minutely crenate.

The 2024 Wister Award is presented to ‘Bantam’, this intermediate sized daffodil is a standout in the garden. This late blooming daffodil has roundish, blunt, brilliant greenish yellow perianth segments with a bowl-shaped corona that is smooth or lightly ribbed orange, has a broad yellow zone at the base and sometimes has a darker orange at the rim.
