N. bicolor x N. pseudonarcissus
Emperor
98 mm wide, vivid yellow perianth segments oblong, twisted, overlapping; inner segments twisted; corona cylindrical, smooth, deeper tone than perianth, mouth expanded, rim widely flanged and deeply notched.
F.W. Burbidge wrote in his report on the Narcissus Committee in 1899 that the raiser appeared to have been the late Mr. Kendall. Burbidge added that one could only guess at its parentage: ‘Maximus’ x ‘Emperor’ say some, and ‘Maximus’ x ‘Golden Spur’ say others.
According to the April 1st, 1899 Gardener’s Chronicle: “A remarkably fine Ajax was sent from Mr. Kendall, Newton Poppleford, Ottery St. Mary, Devon. This flower named King Alfred appears to be the outcome of a cross between N. Emperor and Maximus. The large bloom of rich uniform gold, and thick substance, recalls the features of both parents, as do the tall stems and stout glaucous foliage (First-class Certificate).”
This daffodil is believed to be named after a millenary of one of England’s greatest kings.
