Comments

The description of this variety in Alan Gibson’s 1949 catalog reads: “A very early and vigorous growing variety of exceptional quality and substance that should make this flower excellent for market as well as exhibition. Deep yellow throughout.”

Thoughts on the parentage from New Zealand hybridizer and daffodil historian are as follows: “Its parentage has not been recorded that I am aware of, I would hazard a guess that it was bred from the 2Y-Y Australian variety ‘Malvern Gold’ raised by H.A. Brown, listed as a ‘King Alfred’ seedling. The description of ‘Malvern Gold’ from a 1936 Gibson catalog reads “A rich all yellow incomp., (division 2) large and round with tall strong stems. A.M. and F.C.C. RHS Melbourne, Australia” The other parent I believe could have been the 1Y-Y ‘Golden City’ raised by D.B. West of Australia, described also in Gibson’s 1936 catalog as “A fine variety of uniform rich golden yellow, with broad firm perianth and well proportioned trumpet, tall stems”.”
