This plant earned the Award of Garden Merit (AGM).

Given on the recommendation of Committees to plants of outstanding excellence for garden decoration or use (whether for open garden or under glass). The award is only given following a period of assessment. Assessment can take place in one or more of the following ways: 1) Trials at one of the Society’s Gardens or at some other venue; 2) Visits to specialist collections; 3) Round-table discussions drawing on the collective expertise and experience of Committee members, with the opportunity to call on further specialists when necessary.

In 2011, the American Daffodil Society (ADS) designated a new exhibition section for any daffodil registered between 1940 and 1969, inclusive named "Classics".

The ADS believed that such a section would interest a different segment of exhibitors and might encourage bulb growers to keep these post-war era cultivars available.

The ADS Historic daffodil period ended shortly after World War II started, when marketing and exporting of daffodils temporarily ceased.

When trade resumed, daffodils were different, improvements in form were most noticeable.

Fl. 125 mm diameter, deep golden yellow; perianth segments very broadly ovate, blunt, with white mucro, inflexed, plane or convex, overlapping one-third to a half; the inner segments square-shouldered at base, more usually plane or a little twisted; corona cylindrical, mouth slightly expanded, rim flanged, somewhat irregularly notched and crenate.

Origin of Name

Part of Richardson’s “Race Horse Series.” Named after a very successful Irish racehorse of the 1960’s.
