Comments

Perianth segments broadly ovate, blunt, not prominently mucronate, spreading or somewhat inflexed, twisted or with margins wavy, overlapping one-third; the inner segments more strongly inflexed, more definitely twisted; corona darker in tone than the perianth segments, smooth, mouth widely expanded, with rim deeply notched and crenate. Resembles an earlier-flowered ‘Emperor’ of darker color.

The information that accompanies the historical photo states: “Sir Francis Drake, photographed from bulbs grown at the Coastal Plain Station and forced in the greenhouses at the Arlington Experiment Farm, Rosslyn, VA. This is one of the newer commercial varieties just coming into prominence, but may not be adapted to our conditions.”
